The Mission Horse Club was formed in the 1940’s by Ernie Badke, Bill Grieves and Rudy Herdon. It was originally known as the Blue Star Riders. The club’s shows and activities were held in a field on Cherry Avenue until the land was needed by the District of Mission for a ball field. From Cherry avenue the club moved to the west side of the fairgrounds which were located on Grand Street where it remained for several years. In May 1970 the Mission Horse Club hosted its grand opening show at the new facilities with Mayor Neville Cox, on horseback, cutting the ribbon to mark the official opening of the new riding ring. In 1975 the Mission Horse Club was once again relocated. Initially the Mission Horse Club was relocated to an area near the Mission Cemetery and the club set to work preparing the land for its use, however this ended up being only a short term home for the Mission Horse Club and the club was then moved to our current location at 9457 Stave Lake Street. Even today, 80 years later, the Mission Horse Club is a registered non-profit organization and we are proud to offer the only free public riding facility in the Mission area for all equestrian uses. This facility is also used by other organizations like the 4-H Club and Pony Club free of charge and is maintained by the Mission Horse Club.
Our facilities include a large sand arena and two smaller warm up arenas. There is also a large covered holding area for horses and riders as well as covered bleachers for the spectators. We also have an onsite concession and washroom facilities, plus plenty of parking for horse trailers. Our arenas are open 7 days a week from dawn to dusk for the general public at no cost excluding show dates.
If you know someone who would like to donate building materials or their time, we are always looking to improve the facilities so please have them contact one of the Executives and we would be happy to discuss any future projects or donations they have in mind.
